It is an exercise that I created which is to simply use the date and the time as your header text and use lorem ipsum as your body copy and to create and interesting composition. now I have included an additional element: shapes and the may one day influence a final piece or just simply be there. I will be most pleased to see this having an effect on the way I work in the future. I am constantly striving to improve as a designer and/or as a person."

Rave like no one is watching.
This is a song by Jamie XX, a great song by Jamie XX. A man on a mission to bring back house music to the fore. A member of The XX; that really cool band which hipsters love. Nevermind that. This is a poster that could be used for one of his DJ nights (if he has them). I like designing night club posters and this one is one of my personal favourtes.

Alphabetter
The alphabet. letters used to spell the words that we say and the words that we write. Not universal to every culture but the 26 letters are the letters of my culture. stretching from A to Z. letters are universal to everyone in this culture but typeface and presentation is not. Handwritting is different depending on the person, typeface preferences also vary person to person and I now here you ask why are you saying all of this.
I before new year went a little bit mad and using the idea of negative letter spaces, outlines only. made posters of letters, letters of the alphabet. starting with the first 6. colours change, layouts change, but treatment remain the same. the result varies and some interesting ideas have been achieved and garnered, i am not one to blow my own trumpet but these are good posters me thinks.
click to investigate them closer or just see the madness from the distance you see them now.

Carson, Not Even Once
At this stage in my graphic design career had never heard of David Carson, the master of grunge typography and the publisher of raygun magazine. I simply knew how to manipulate things in photoshop and thought what I can do with images I can sutrely do with type. So I did and these are the results.
As I have developed an interest in type, I can see that they have carson written all of over them. He knew nothing about type when he made his pieces and at this stage (late college) neither did I so I once had something in common with a typographic genius. He broke the rule and and I may very well of done but how could I know I was breaking them without knowing of there existence. This means that I can become one too. Maybe. Probably not. but maybe.

The Photocopier is my Screen
The Photocopier is my screen. Andy is my hero so I combined the too. Having been crowned king of the photocopier by illustration station cos I am always photocopying things. I decided to experiment more with the potential of the copier. Using the one colour filter I made the above. it simply screens a colour cast over the image. The image of Andy was from the i Paper as it was a review of his exhibition in Liverpool, which I must must must go to.
Now Andy's probably most famous piece is Marilyn and these are Andy as the Marilyn's , at least my interpretation. Using a photopied image and a marker pen set. One is the colour version, when he was in the star light and the other, the black and white as his starlight starts to dwindle as well as his mortality, having died twice.

Down in Train Station after 10?
I have only tried to upload these multiple times in the past 2 weeks since they were taken.
As per usual I pick my friends up from the train station every time that they go home. It's kind of a tradition cos more often than not I miss the bones off them when they leave. but anyway. on this ocassion the train was delayed so I had to fine something to do while waiting. twiddling my thumbs had no real appeal. So I got out my phone camera and discovered it had a long exposure option and these have always fascinated me, so I Passed the time looking an idiot and moving my camera around.
The result above do vary. The Heart shape is nice, the complete visual chaos and abstract seems to catch my eyes too. Hipsters do this all the time and claim it to be deep and thoughtful but I just like the look. More images in this style are to come...

All My Colours
Tumblr is a great source of images of the things that you love and when I stumbled across two images of one of my heroes, that were really very good; too good in fact not to do something with. The photos were of Ian McCulloch, the lead singer of one of my favourite bands, Echo and the Bunnymen. I chose to screen over some of the lyrics from one of the gloomiest songs due to the atmosphere in the pictures.
the Bad, the Font and the change of opinion
Bauhaus 93, I hate you. You are considered a cool and very fun and original font. I have seen you used on clubs and bars and posters. The general public uses you all the time but you have no redeeming features. You look nothing like any that was ever used by the Bauhaus school. the school that is one of the most important designs schools on the planet. ever. The Nazi's didn't like them but I do.
So I decided to take a stand and try and improve the reputation of the font as a mission. By making these typographic illustrations. The redeeming features of the font is that it bold and strong shapes to it thus making it easy to create images using the letter forms. This self initiated project is reminiscent of a type project that I did at uni and for the first week I did the project completely wrong. I was simply meant to make a pattern out of type and not an image.

Opposites Will Happen
Opposites have always played a big part of design. and in the way of the world it is said that opposites attract. One of my favourite words is associated with opposites; Juxtaposition.
"the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect."
I have applied this here in these posters to promote being proud of who you are. Placing the positive element on what is considered to be a negative aspect as well as reinforcing this by placing a bland colour onto what would be considered the prefered characteristic.
We don't have to follow what is considered to be a good thing. we can be whoever we want to be. This message is all shown in my favourite new font "Ostrich sans".

Back to Front, Front to Back
"Inspiaration have I none" is something that I have never said apart from when singing alng to David Bowie (wuzza Wuzz). My inspiration here was Tumblr; the website full of Hip, cool and young people, sharing images of funny animals, Fandoms and Mozza. I use it for mainly design and music.
Perspective, its all about it in these images. I have created a set of shapes that are all made of the same composite shapes but arranged in such away different images are made. If you look carefully; 2 repeats can be seen.

Light Show

I fell in love with this effect. So I made a poster with it. Its a lens flare effect, copied and offset with the colours turned up so that they are brighter. Sounds easy, was easy and looks fancy.

Nightclubbing
More than just a song by Grace Jones, it is a concept, where people go out on a night and enjoy themselves and consume alcohol. Never been much of a fan of it but one thing I know about it is it normally is promoted with some really bad posters done by the PR staff in the back of the clubs office. Below are the alternatives. I have made up some Club nights and made posters for the them. None of have out of date or blurry pictures of drunk people or stock images of people enjoying themselves. To me these are the type of posters designers want to see and go to on a night out.
