Talented Friends

The second exhibition in the new uni gallery space (formerly the library)  that I have been too (can't remember the first but we are gonna roll on) went off with a great amount of pomp and hype. Two comic book artists opened it, one American illustrator/artist and the other a Cumbrian with a fondness for walking. Both were in the region for the lakes comic arts festival in Kendal. Oliver East opened it with a small speech about the theme of the exhibition, walking comics, speaking on that, his dyslexia and his future plans and the work is great. Below are my photo's but there are some better ones on the Grillust blog for you amusement.

The reason I am writing this is to congratulate all the illustrators on all of the hard work that they put into their comics. All were fabulous in a variety of different ways.

How did i get into uni?

This is a question, I often ask myself, and to be honest I have no idea. I would like to say it was down to my outstanding grades. It wasn't. I did put a lot of effort into my limited graphic design course, which I am labeling art, sort of. Art, maybe. The anti comic sans course. I will choose one of them.

The only reason I say this as I was sorting through my work and found my portfolio, the very portfolio, untouched, that got me into team grillust, into the next step/branch of my educational adventure. Now by today's standards of my work (not perfect but learning) the pieces in there don't even count as design. The body of work over them ten pages shows a primitive knowledge of Photoshop, an ability to copy/trace pre-existing materials as well as poor type choices.

It is a time stamp. I have just sort of said its bad but it was of its time a brings home the fact that I do not suck as much as my depressed mind sometimes tells me I am. I still love my "Hey Jude" collage, it took hours but just represents how much of a behemoth that song is: especially the LOVE version is.

ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

I have been cheated but I am trying not to get down hearted because I made some great work for someone but they just couldn't see it. I have been messaging various companies for work and this gymnastics club got back to me and were very interested in my work, but they liked NOTHING i did for them, not one logo had one redeeming feature. Above and below are my favourite examples of work which I am more than welcome to change the name and words to meet a request if any gymnastics club owners are reading this.

The Official Opening

This blog post is the official opening of the James Reay Design website. It has been constructed and coded by my good self as part of a university project. It is a portfolio website and is there to display some of my most of my personal and as well as client based work. This is something that potential clients who are looking for designers will look at...if you are one of those people don't hesitate have a look. Click on the image below and prepare for a journey into the work of James Alexander Reay.

Baby, you're a Firewerk

That typo in the title is intentional, so don't worry, I hate that song so so won't credit it properly. Just the person I am.

Last weekend, fireworks lit up the sky's above Carlisle as part of the fireworks display. set to music the fireworks would explode out of time but at least did drown out the bad songs. No everyone takes photos of fireworks as if they are still things with no sense of movement or motion. So I spiced the light show photos up using long exposure, my fabled friend. Visual chaos is the optimum phrase here. Yes the photos repeat as well but this was done to light up the page, just like they did the sky.
