Groove is in the heart

One day, when I was out tumbling on tumblr of all places I found these marvelous pictures of the very glamorous RĂ©gine Chassagne of the band Arcade Fire doing what appeared to be doing a solo show or guessing with a band but the shots were so good, I nabbed them and made these.

Arcade fire's last LP was very rhythm based so assuming that they had listened to a lot of African music to get this influenece, I thought up a club night for this style of music. The name of the event comes from a new up and coming artist called, Lone Lady. WIth regards to colour choices it needed to be bright and earthy so an orange, made great sense. Soil = Brown + brightness = Orange. The green for the background is grass and the over spill colour is the blue of the sky. The font is bebas as with most things I do. I am still very obsessed with it.

Logos for labels

I recently set my self the challenge of designing logo's for fictional record companies that could exist. and then later on do the sleeves for some of the releases that may actually be released. so far two ideas have sprung to mind. One (Souled Out Records) while watching the ever topical question time and the other out of boredom (test Pressing records).
Souled out records, despite having the colour scheme of a sport shop, (thinking about changing the colours because of this).  I indended to be the kinda company the would reissue lost soul gems and family favourites. Despite soul music being a very straight forward 4/4 affair traditionally, I decided to mess things up putting text above the baseline where it should be, (cheeky).

Test Pressing Records would be a different kettle of fish, It would be a short run represses out krautrock and early synth pop. Kraftwerk is the band that springs to mind immediately when I thought of this idea. A excellent label called Minimal Wave, does a similar sort of idea and there design is also brill. The O is record so it looking like it is recording at all times.

Normal business will be resumed

It has been a hectic couple of weeks for the James reay Camp but I will promise you on monday regular posting of random shenanigans and design will resume. I have a lot to say I promise but just haven't had time. Honest. To make up for lost time spam will be the order of the day, Unfortunate for some but I love it.

Lager, Lager, lager

Hand type is becoming a thing of mine. It's not something I am particularly big on, because my hand writting isn't good and fonts are more regimented and tracked correctly making them better in my eyes. But there is charm in amatureness (inventing words) apparently. according to er... me. When put at a large scale my hand writing becomes character filled and odd.

I am a big beer drinker, if you couldn't tell from my round belly, and while examining the deals, I study the packaging and on certain brands of lager they are going for the hand drawn aesthic (see I bet you thought, this was going nowhere and just a statement). So that's what you see above, is a fusion of my hand drawn type as well as my love of beer.

Above you can see the blue range, of the CMYK lagers that we offer, fictionally because I don't have a license to sell lager, but i were to they would be produced.

Soul Bass

Do you like Soul music? of course you do. Do you like Saul Bass? Well I think that you should. if not hand your head in shame. If you have never studied either, read this and then fly my pretties and spread your wings and discover.

I have fused the two in the pieces below. The top one is my favourite posters I have ever made. Motown has played a big part in my life since I bought "Dancing in the street" a two CD compilation of the hits from "Hitsville USA" at the age of 13/14. I could not stop listening to it and it is now one of my Favourite genres. mainly just soul in general having since discovered Stax and the work of Otis Redding as well as Aretha Franklin.

I made these on saturday morning while watching a documentary on Joy Division. as you do. I only really learnt about Saul Bass at college and Uni and found the true meaning of simplistic beauty. Which is something I tried to encapsulate below.
